CrossFit is group fitness training that is composed of “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement” (from the CrossFit Journal Articles, 2007). It includes aerobic exercise, bodyweight strengthening, calisthenics and gymnastics, and weightlifting principles. CrossFit’s aim is to improve the following tenets of physical fitness: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy (from The CrossFit Guide for Beginners (Must Know Before You Start), 2019).

Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts of maximal weight on three lifts: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. It involves the athlete making a single, maximal weight lift of those movements. The roots of powerlifting go as far back as the ancient Greeks and Persians, and powerlifting has been an official Olympic sport since 1896.

In the world of barbell sports (that is, CrossFit, powerlifting, and Olympic Weightlifting), injuries come with the territory. Who better to help you recover from injury (and prevent future injury) than a Doctor of Physical Therapy? DPTs are your movement experts. And what if you add USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach Certifications, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist backgrounds, and prior work experience as athletic trainers to the mix? That’s what you have at Premier.

We take all of our athletes through bodyweight movement screens, provide corrective exercises specifically tailored to the barbell movements that are painful, add in some hands-on treatment (as needed), and then actually get you to perform those lifts in the clinic with a barbell and weight to get you back in the gym and back competing again.

What to do

You’re not going to get back to competing at the level you were before (or better) if you just use some elastic bands and ankle weights. You need to practice the movement in a controlled environment under supervision of sports injury rehabilitation specialists. Feel better, move better, and get back to setting PRs. Call the clinic or fill out the forms on our website to schedule your appointment today.
